CONFESSIONS OF A MOMPRENEUR: Leadership Lessons my daughters taught me in business
Monday, January 16, 2012 at 09:22AM Sherre Demao - July 27th
As founder of a 27-year old award-winning marketing strategy and branding firm, Sherré has literally raised a business and three daughters, all younger than her business. As a result, her daughters got front row seats to the life of an entrepreneurial mom and were frequently at Mom’s side during times when what comes out of the mouths of babes is priceless, as well as precious wisdom. Sherré shared some light-hearted and poignant examples of lessons learned and insights gained from those little voices in her head that were not her imagination, but her children. Her stories began with one that through her daughter’s friend’s desire to go to a camp led her to learn the value of “I will either find away or make a way”. Sherri explained that we should not allow ourselves to feel guilty about making lifer easier on ourselves and related it to a story about the value of her daughters’ chores. From an experience with her girls helping with the business she was also able to explain the importance of keeping your mind open to all possible resources and support. We continued to learn how a little patience goes a long way towards getting out of our own way when she told a story about her 4 year old tying her shoe which had the group laughing and relating. Sherre explained how with patience you can teach and let someone else do it. She also inspired us to challenge ourselves to delegate.
Even mistakes can bring immense opportunity, Sherre explained when she shared a story about how her daughter informed her when she discovered a mistake with some fliers that she had “3 Choices”…the very same 3 choices she had used with her daughters was being given back to her by one of her daughter which gave Sherre the insight to go with the choice to “calm down and we can all have a nice day”! There was also a message about really understanding what people are saying and how eye contact can confirm the ear. The presentation ended on a great story about multi-tasking that definitely had the group laughing. The group definitely appreciated the important messages that were delivered in these wonderful stories and especially the touches of humor.
